On 1st December 1970, the Marxist government renamed the
country to the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen.
On 22nd May 1990, South Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen) merged to
become the present-day Republic of Yemen.
Following a civil war, South Yemen declared itself
independent
again (as the Democratic Republic of Yemen) on 21st May 1994, although
this was not recognised by the international community. It
was
fully reincorporated into the Republic of Yemen on 7th July 1994.
