3 October 1990
In 1945, following Germany's defeat
in World War
II, the country was divided into four zones administered by France, the
United Kingdom, the United States of America and the USSR. Berlin, the
capital, was similarly divided into four sectors.
On 23rd May 1949, the American, British and French zones
to become the Federal Republic of Germany - informally known as West
Germany. This included the three corresponding sectors in
(together known as West Berlin), which was an enclave within East Germany.
West Germany was declared "fully sovereign" on 5th May 1955.
West Germany and East
Germany were reunified on 3rd October 1990.
The reunified country was an enlarged Federal Republic of
Germany. Legally nothing had changed; it simply ceased to be
known as West Germany.
