The Saar Territory was created on 26th February
from parts of Prussia and Bavaria in Germany. It was under
control of the League of Nations, but in practice administered by
On 1st March 1935, the territory was reincorporated into
Saar was occupied and governed by France from 30th October
1945, firstly as part of the French Zone of Occupation. From
December 1947, it was administered separately.
France tried to create an independent Saarland, but this
was rejected in a referendum on 23rd October 1955.
On 1st January 1957, Saar was incorporated into West Germany as the state
of Saarland, and is now part of the reunified Germany.
