Independent nation - Republic of Ireland
The island of Ireland officially became part of the United
Kingdom on 1st January 1801.
On 21st January 1919, Ireland declared independence from
United Kingdom, although this was not recognised by the British
Following the Anglo-Irish War (also known as the Irish War
Independence), the Anglo-Irish Treaty, signed on 6th December 1921,
transformed most of Ireland into a British dominion. Northern
Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom.
On 29th December 1937, a new constitution transformed the
Free State into an independent nation, known as Éire (in
or Ireland (in English).
