With the signing of the treaty, Finland ceded approximately
of its territory to the USSR. Additionally the Hanko
was leased to the Soviets until 1970 for use as a naval base.
handover of Hanko took place on 22nd March 1940.
On 2nd December 1941, during the Continuation
War, the USSR
was forced to retreat from Hanko and control reverted to Finland,
although the Soviet Union continued to lay claim to the base until the
signing of the Paris Peace Treaty on 10th February 1947 when the lease
was officially annulled.
