Independent free city
- Apart from a brief period of independence, the city of
Danzig was part of Prussia since 1793.
In 1871, Prussia became part of the German Empire.
- On 28th June 1919, the signing of the Treaty of Versailles
officially ended World War I and made Danzig a free city.
- On 1st September 1939, Danzig was forcibly captured and
- The Soviet army
took the city on 30th March 1945.
- After World War II, the city was awarded to Poland, and is
now known by its Polish name Gdańsk.
