- On 18th June 1829, the British settlements in the west of Australia became the Swan River Colony.
- On 6th February 1832, the Swan River Colony was renamed Western Australia.
- On 1st January 1901, Western Australia and the other British colonies in Australia (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria) united, each forming a state within the Commonwealth of Australia (a British dominion).
- Today, Western Australia forms a state within the independent Commonwealth of Australia.
