- On 15th July 1851, Victoria was separated from the British colony of New South Wales to become a colony in its own right.
- On 1st January 1901, Victoria and the other British colonies in Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia) united, each forming a state within the Commonwealth of Australia (a British dominion).
- Today, Victoria forms a state within the independent Commonwealth of Australia.
