- On 3rd December 1825, Van Diemen's Land was separated from the British colony of New South Wales to become a colony in its own right.
- On 1st November 1856, Van Diemen's Land was renamed to Tasmania.
- On 1st January 1901, Tasmania and the other British colonies in Australia (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia) united, each forming a state within the Commonwealth of Australia (a British dominion).
- Today, Tasmania forms a state within the independent Commonwealth of Australia.
