- On 10th December 1859, Queensland was separated from the British colony of New South Wales to become a colony in its own right.
- On 1st January 1901, Queensland and the other British colonies in Australia (New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia) united, each forming a state within the Commonwealth of Australia (a British dominion).
- Today, Queensland forms a state within the independent Commonwealth of Australia.
