Divided into an independent nation - St. Kitts and Nevis, and
a British overseas territory - Anguilla
From 1833 the islands of
Anguilla, Nevis and St.
Christopher (or St. Kitts) were governed as part of the Leeward Islands colony.
January 1960, the Territory of the Leeward
Islands was disbanded and split up, the islands of Anguilla,
Nevis and St. Christopher becoming the new territory St.
Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla within the West Indies Federation.
When this federation collapsed on 31st May 1962, St.
Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla became a separate British dependency
In 1967 the islands achieved full internal autonomy.
In 1971 Anguilla was allowed to secede from the dependency,
although it did not officially do so until 19th December 1980.
remains a self-governing British overseas territory today.
The remaining islands of St. Kitts and Nevis gained full
independence from Britain on 19th September 1983.
