The British protectorate of Bechuanaland was founded on
31st March 1885.
On 1st September 1885, the southern part of the Bechanaland
protectorate bacame part of the Cape
Until 3rd October 1963, Bechuanaland, together with Basutoland
and Swaziland, was administered by the British High Commissioner for Southern Africa. Therefore Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland were together known as the High Commission
The capital of Bechuanaland was Mafeking (now known as
Mafikeng) which was actually located in the Cape Colony (from 1910
part of South Africa).
In February 1965, the capital was moved to Gaberones (now
known as Gaborone).
On 30th September 1966, Bechuanaland gained full
independence from Britain, changing its name to Botswana.
